The Horizon Europe project NBS4Drought has officially launched with its kick-off meeting in Aarhus, Denmark.

Coordinated by Aarhus University, NBS4Drought is the first European project focused specifically on drought through Nature-based Solutions. Over the next four years, the consortium will provide scientific, technical, and policy evidence on the cost-effectiveness and scalability of wetland-based NBS. Seven showcases across Europe’s major bioclimatic zones will serve as living laboratories, helping to co-design and test innovative approaches to drought resilience.

During the three-day meeting, partners exchanged insights on the current status of the showcases, discussed collaboration and stakeholder engagement strategies, and reflected on how to ensure long-term impact and replicability.

IUCN Europe will lead work on policy, governance, and capacity building, identifying barriers and opportunities for the broader uptake of NBS for drought management. The organization will also contribute to the development of policy recommendations, innovative financing approaches, and training modules to support practitioners and decision-makers at local, national, and EU levels.
