Mission

The Climate Change and Energy Transition Team’s mission is to drive transformative changes through integrated approaches to the interconnected crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and human development.

Vision

A climate-resilient world for people and nature, with climate change limited to 1.5 °C, is underpinned by climate justice and a just and equitable energy transition.

Background

Climate change poses a fundamental threat to nature, species, and people. However, nature provides key solutions for building resilience, carbon storage and sequestration — benefits that can be safeguarded by protecting, restoring, and better managing our natural resources. Nature-based Solutions, and the infrastructure and technology that support them, serve as an integral piece of the required global response for climate action on mitigation, adaptation and building resilience. IUCN works collaboratively with its Members, Commissions, and partners to tackle both the climate change and biodiversity crises together, responding to IUCN’s Nature 2030 Programme Framework, the Marseille Resolution and IUCN’s Resolutions on this topic.

As part of the Center for Conservation Action, the Climate Change and Energy Transition Team leads IUCN’s global thematic work on climate change, providing strategic direction focused on harnessing nature's potential to achieve mitigation and just transition objectives while nurturing resilience, safeguarding livelihoods, and empowering communities.

Collectively, we act through:

  • Capitalising IUCN’s convening power and thought leadership to advocate for global policies and build strategic partnerships that advance climate-nature action for adaptation, risk reduction and mitigation;
  • Servicing our members by unlocking financing that acts as seed capital for innovative approaches to adaptation and resilience, leveraging members’ expertise and capacities to generate impact; and
  • Demonstrating NbS through on-the-ground projects in collaboration with regions, across Teams, Commissions, and Members, enhancing the impact of IUCN’s portfolio on climate change and strengthening the integration of climate risks throughout. Evidence from the field informs science and knowledge generation to target a broader set of stakeholders.

Strategic pillars

The CCET Team operates across three strategic pillars with core areas of work:

  • Accelerating Equitable Nature-based Solutions for Climate Adaptation and ResilienceBuilding global partnerships for enhanced climate action by promoting policy and investment alignments and developing linkages between the Rio Conventions such as the ENACT and FEBA. Promoting nature based integrated approaches for influencing and informing effective climate action on-ground such as NAbSA, CBAScale+, and ReSea. Mobilising enhanced finance through multiple revenue streams to enable the implementation of nature-based solutions for climate change, such as through the Global EbA Fund.
  • Advancing Social Inclusive Nature based Solutions for Climate Change Mitigation: Supporting best practices in climate mitigation investments to minimize risks of maladaptation and ancillary negative impacts on biodiversity, such as developing best practices for the use of nature-based solutions as carbon offsets.  Enhancing nature’s ability to store carbon across forests, drylands, and oceans by deploying nature-based solutions for climate mitigation such as reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), promoting forest landscape restoration and blue carbon such as through the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA).
  • Supporting Decarbonization and a Just and Sustainable Energy Transition for Nature and People: Catalysing global collaboration for promotion of nature-positive renewable energy both at the policy and practice levels such as GINGR and REN2. The development and uptake of renewable energy best practices and supporting new, low-carbon technologies.

Across strategic pillars, the Climate Change and Energy Transition Team works towards building a unified voice on climate action among IUCN offices, members and stakeholders, and supporting countries to enhance and implement their climate commitments under the UNFCCC, working closely with the IUCN International Policy Centre.
